THE ORIGIN
THE DISCOURSE is a brainchild of some attendees of Sociology class of 1st year where the discussion was taking place on how to make the Sociological phenomenon the topics of general discourse. The discussion kept on getting deeper and the nuances were being put forward on the table & then an idea struck our minds - Why don’t we build a platform for such discussion to take place and for these ideas to thrive on instead of us being the armchair theorists.
THE BUDDING STAGE
We 10-12 students of Faculty of Social Sciences, BHU sat together, discussed the ideas in detail, figured out the requirements, divided ourselves among some committees for proper division of responsibilities. We made plans with enthusiasm, failed in many of them terribly but succeeded in some & these small successes gave us the fuel to keep the flambeaus inside us ignited & This is how THE DISCOURSE was formed on 14th December, 2022.
THE INITIAL TREK
Initially our focus was on making people aware about the basic Sociological phenomena. So we followed the process of taking up a complicated Sociological phenomenon, organizing a lecture/discussion by some experts/professors of concerned domains followed by a discussion session that gave everyone a platform to put forward the layman understanding of the respective phenomenon in front of everybody which would be followed by a discussion and then review and addition by experts of that topic present there who would simplify the topics for everybody making their understanding of these topics even more clearer.
THE CONSOLIDATING PHASE
Later on THE DISCOURSE felt the need of expanding its scope engaging more people. We did so by introducing the popular discussions of topics of contemporary relevance where we would try to understand the Sociological rationale behind these events. We conducted a career guidance program involving experts/honourable professors of various departments of BHU proving our motto of having an interdisciplinary approach.
THE QUEST TO FIND ABLED SUCCESSORS
One thing was consistent during all this time- A small but dedicated and responsible team. We shared a great bond together, shared moments of laughter and joy together while working for the society and learning many skills in the process.
THE DISCOURSE PHASE 2.0
But now we had our fingers crossed as we entered the last phase of our college life. Now finding some good successors whom we can pass on the working of the society was a great responsibility. They would carry forward the legacy we had built throughout the time. We had to carefully select and curate the New Core Team. We did so by recruiting them and conducting workshop of every task we do here at The Discourse.
THE PROLIFERATION STAGE
Finally the New Core Team took the charge and to our amazement they i.e. THE DISCOURSE CORE TEAM 2.0 were like our replicas, they had same level of enthusiasm and will to work for the society as we had at the time of establishment of the society. We knew we had chosen a right hands to pass on the society to and this is how THE DISCOURSE PHASE 2 started under this new team.
THE EPILOGUE
THE DISCOURSE touched new heights in the upcoming times and became one of the most active and widely recognized society of BHU. It expanded its domain under these able successors who would not hesitate to experiment with the workings. Some successful implementations are THE DISCOURSE MAGAZINE & NEWSLETTER, Info graphic Series, Open Discussion Sessions and the WEBSITE itself on which you are reading this.
You read this Journey of THE DISCOURSE from the POV of one of the founding members of this society. We usually follow a certain structure while doing write-ups on any topic but since it was about telling our story to you all, We decided to take the liberty of going free flowing with this one.
The Journey of THE DISCOURSE will keep getting more and more enriched with time.
